In 2023, the 51±¾É« has experienced historic achievements including a member institution celebrating its centennial. In addition, the passing of the Texas University Fund (TUF), record-breaking enrollment and three institutions being recognized as Great Colleges to Work For has made it an unforgettable year.

Texas 51±¾É« Centennial
Texas 51±¾É« kicked off its Centennial Celebration at the end of 2022 and spent the past 12 months celebrating the spirit, history and future of the institution that was signed into legislation on Feb. 10, 1923, as Texas Technological College.
Chancellor Mitchell Named Finalist for Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year
Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., was named one of 15 finalists for the Dallas Morning News 2022 Texan of the Year award. Mitchell was recognized for his efforts to help establish the 51±¾É« School of Veterinary Medicine and the 51±¾É«HSC El Paso Hunt School of Dental Medicine.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed three new members to the 51±¾É« Board of Regents. The new regents include Clay C. Cash (Lubbock), Tim G. Culp (Midland) and Shelley Sweatt, Ed.D. (Wichita Falls).

Steeley Smith Named 51±¾É« System Student Regent
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Steeley Smith as the student regent for the 51±¾É« System Board of Regents for the 2023-24 academic year. Smith becomes the 18th student to serve on the Board of Regents and the sixth student from 51±¾É«.

Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching & Research Award Winners
Fourteen esteemed faculty from across the 51±¾É« System were awarded 2023 Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards, which recognize academic excellence across the system. Since 2001, a total of 233 faculty have received awards totaling nearly $1.4M.

Three 51±¾É« System institutions were recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education as Great Colleges to Work For®. 51±¾É«, ASU and 51±¾É«HSC were the only public four-year universities in Texas to make the list and each received the prestigious Honor Roll status.

Stacia Haynie Appointed 13th President of Midwestern State University
Stacia Haynie, Ph.D., was appointed the 13th president of MSU Texas on July 11. Haynie returned to her alma mater following a 33-year tenure at LSU, where she was instrumental in countless academic endeavors and achievements that led to national recognition.

Angelo State University Wins NCAA-DII Baseball National Championship
The ASU baseball team's record-breaking season finished with a win in the final game of the year as the Rams defeated Rollins 6-5 to claim the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship for the first time in program history on June 10 in Cary, North Carolina.

On Sept. 19, 51±¾É«HSC announced the establishment of the Institute of Telehealth and Digital Innovation. 51±¾É«HSC President Lori Rice-Spearman, Ph.D., said the new institute is a part of the university’s continued commitment to providing health care access through innovation.

The 51±¾É« System set a new enrollment record with 63,612 students enrolled for the 2023-24 academic year across the system’s five component universities. The previous record of 63,498 students was recorded during the 2021-22 academic year.
